Matt Goj, Business with Logistics and Supply Chain Management, Northumbria University, Graduate of 2022
Logistics is a key element in keeping pace with customer demands and outperforming competitors. These 2 factors made me feel that logistics is the best field for me. I find fulfilment not only on my professional level but also on my personal one. From a professional perspective, I think it is great to see the tangible outcome of your work and always setting the bar high as it is a very challenging industry, but also rewarding at the same time. From a personal perspective, what makes me content is that culture is built around one thing – creating happy customers. Perhaps it is only me, but regardless of whether that is a customer, colleague or partner, if I can raise his/her smile it just makes my day.
I became a NOVUS student because I knew that it was the best thing I could do at that time. It was my first year at the University of Northumbria, so I wanted to make the most of that time. However, because it was my first year in the UK, I did not know how to do it. A few discussions with Bethany Windsor and my attendance at a couple of NOVUS events let me understand the path I should follow to become a shrewd logistician. Right now, I am in my final year with a year of experience working for the biggest 3PL in the UK and a clear mindset of who I want to be and where I want to be. So far I have worked in Wincanton over the period of 12 months whilst on my placement. Currently, I am on another internship with LeanMail. When I graduate, I would like to gain some more experience working on a variety of projects and getting to know other departments within the industry. At this stage, I think that experience and expanding your network is key to become the best version of yourself.
I believe that I am quite an organised and target oriented person. As I mentioned at the beginning keeping pace with customer demands and outperforming competitors is key. In my opinion, these 2 features complement the main challenges which the logistics sector faces. Moreover, having good communication skills is also an advantage. Information interchange plays an important role in creating a cost-effective and agile logistics management process. It ensures that tasks are completed and transferred from one point to the other seamlessly and without delay. That is something I felt pretty anxious about, but due to my placement year, I managed to improve this skill as well. Are you worried about your future when you graduate? I will give you a piece of advice. Join NOVUS scheme, be open-minded, work hard and everything will be fine. I promise!
